The NCDOR began the tax season for accepting the 2023 tax returns on 29 January 2024. The taxpayers who have filed their returns must have received their tax refund because the agency started issuing the tax refund on 18 March 2024.
The e-filers must have received the refunds within 2 weeks of their return unless their return is on hold for review.
The late filers or taxpayers who have filed their tax returns recently through extension must be waiting for their tax refunds. The processing time for tax refunds is the same for e-filers, however, the refund can take longer due to additional reviews.
The NCDOR understands the worries of the taxpayers and has a system where taxpayers can easily track their refund status.

Reasons that can delay your NCDOR refund
The tax refund can be delayed due to many reasons, so taxpayers must be aware of the reasons that delay their tax refund to avoid such mistakes:
- Your tax return has some math error, miscalculation, or adjustment that can change your tax refund amount from the amount you calculated. In such a case, the agency will send you the notice to let you know and make the needed adjustments.
- Your tax return is incomplete and has some info missing like bank account info, W-2s, etc. The missing information can delay your tax refund as the taxpayers have to file the return again with the correct information.
- You have filed more than one form type to complete your tax return, which is not needed. So, always check your state tax return form type to file the return properly.
- You have selected the paper check as your method to receive the tax refund. The paper check can take longer depending on your local postal services.
- You owe debt or payment to the agency or IRS.
Where to inquire about refunds withheld or deducted by local/ State/ Federal agencies?
Your refund can be delayed or deducted when you owe a debt to the state or IRS. The department checks the debts or payments when they process the refund.
If the department finds out that you owe any payment or debt to the state or IRS, it will notify you and deduct the amount from your tax refund. The debt condition does not apply to your spouse’s returns when you file the tax returns jointly.
- The taxpayers can inquire with the agency about the debt if they have any questions about withholding their tax refund.
- The taxpayers should contact the agency that receives their refund from the Revenue Department and inquire about their due debt.
The taxpayers can always stay updated with their refund application status through the Where’s My Refund application without any worry. The agency is committed to making the system transparent and easy for taxpayers, so stay updated and informed about all your tax duties.
