The Lake Country Fire Department finally managed to secure the funding for the Firesmart initiatives around the communities. Over the years, the Lake Country has had many incidents of wildfire that led to people evacuating their homes, loss of property, and loss of people. 

The FireSmart is an initiative to make communities aware of wildfire precautionary measures, how to avoid wildfire, and how to make your homes wildfire-free. Through the recent funding, the Lake Country Fire Department is all set to offer green waste disposal bins to FireSmart on their property and a rebate to eligible residents.

According to reports, most of the wildfire in Lake Country is spread through the grass, and shrubs around the house. The Fire Department will have signs around the community for people to let them know what can be disposed of in these green bins for the FireSmart Home program. 

Meanwhile, the department plans to grant a $500 rebate to Lake Country residents as well as to encourage people to keep their property FireSmart.

Who will receive the Lake Country $500 Grant? 

According to the sources, the Department will offer to $500 rebate to the Lake Country residents when they fulfill the following requirements:

  • The Lake Country residence owns the property. 
  • The property owners who have gotten their FireSmart Home assessment done through the FireSmart Home Program.
  • People who are following the recommendations after the assessment to make their homes or property a FireSmart property or home.  

Lake Country Rebate and Green Waste Disposal Bin Objective

The Lake Country Fire Department plans to achieve the following objectives through the $500 rebate and Green waste disposable bin for the community:

  • FireSmartHome Assessment: With the rebate, the government aims to receive more requests for the FireSmart assessment reached to as many property owners and mitigate the wildfire risk around the properties. The Department aims to encourage people to follow the recommendations to protect their homes. 
  • Financial support: The $500 rebate will support the people who wish to protect their homes and property from the fire incident during the wildfire season. The rebate will relieve their financial burden and encourage them to follow the FireSmart recommendations immediately without worrying about financial stress like the cost of landscapers, professional arborists, etc. 
  • Save money: With the 40-yard Green Waste Disposal bin around the Lake Country community save the pockets of residents from disposal fees and landfill trips when they cut the shrubs and trees to make their property FireSmart and less prone to wildfire. The SuperSave bins are placed around the town for people to ensure that no plastic bags, leaves, or building materials are placed around the community, the Department will dump the bins regularly around the community and will install more in the future. 
  • Green Projects: With the Green Waste Disposal bin, the department plans to collect more leaves, branches, and twigs for use in green projects or OgoGrow around the Lake Country to make the country sustainable and environment-friendly. 
  • Strengthen the Fire-proofing Community: The initiative will strengthen the FireSmart initiative to create a FireSmart property and mitigate the risk of wildfire in the Lake Country through a fire-proof community. 

How to apply for the Lake Country $500 Grant?

The Lake Country residents can apply for the $500 rebate through the following ways:

  • First, you have to apply for a FireSmart Assessment of your property. You can apply online by submitting the FireSmart Property Assessment Application Form on the  official website at https://www.firesmartapp.ca/application/BD275 
  • Or you can download the application Form and fill the form as a property owner or legal representative of the property owner and send your signed application to the authority via email or Fax. You can contact your local program coordinator of FireSmart Home Program around your community. The District of Lake Country is still training the local firefighters for in-person assessment for the FireSmart Assessment, so it may take time for your FireSmart Home Assessment after the application, so be patient. 

The Lake Country residents who have already gotten their assessment done can expect the rebate to cover the cost of the FireSmart Assessment recommendations to reduce the risks of wildfire damages. 

The wildfire season is approaching, so Lake Country residents should take steps to protect their home and their loved ones and contribute to eliminating the causes of wildfire spread in the Lake Country. 

Tips to make your property FireSmart property

The Lake Country residents can follow the below FireSmart guidelines and make their property FireSmart:

  • Clean your roof regularly to remove the debris and embers collected on your roof. 
  • You can use fire-resistant windows and siding to protect your home against wildfire. 
  • You should make sure your doors and windows are sealed properly and are fire-rated.
  • Make sure your yard is clean and the area around your house is clear of large bushes. 
  • You should separate the wooden fencing from your home and keep it at a distance of 1.5 meters from your house.
  • You should install a spark arrestor chimney to reduce the chances of sparks escaping and starting a fire due to sparks from the chimney.
