In the US, the 2026 tax season officially began on January 26, 2026, meaning the Internal Revenue Service started accepting tax returns on that date. As in previous years, most people can expect to receive their refunds within 21 days.

The exact timing of your refund depends on how you filed your return; those who file electronically generally receive their refunds faster, while those who file on paper may have to wait up to eight weeks.

Taxpayers who claim the EITC or ACTC on their returns have to wait a little longer than usual to receive their refund, whether they filed electronically or on paper. The reason for this, along with the refund timeline and other details, is shared below.

IRS Refund Timeline 2026

The Internal Revenue Service has officially released the refund timeline for electronic and paper filing for the January 2026 tax season, which we have discussed in the following points.

  • According to the IRS, if the refund is filed electronically and all details are included, it takes a maximum of 21 days to receive the refund. When you file your return electronically, the IRS receives it within 24 hours and accepts it within 7 to 10 days if all the details are accurate. Then, the refund is released within a maximum of 10 days, and you will likely receive it within 4 hours of its release.
  • According to the IRS, after filing on paper, you may have to wait up to 8 weeks to receive your refund. When you file your return on paper, it takes about a week for the IRS to receive it, but they don’t process it immediately. Instead, they process the files that are already available first. Processing typically begins four weeks after the return is received, and if all the details are correct, it is processed within 6-7 weeks of filing, and then the refund is received within 10 days.

Those claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit should be aware that the IRS will begin processing refunds for these taxpayers on February 21, 2026, for the 2026 tax season.

It applies to those who claimed one or both of these tax credits on their tax returns, as federal law, the PATH Act, prohibits the IRS from processing such returns before February 15, 2026.

When to expect the IRS Tax Refund 2026?

Taxpayers who filed their refunds electronically between January 9 and January 15, 2026, can expect to receive their refunds on or before February 5, 2026. Those who claimed EITC or ACTC in their tax returns will have to wait until March 2, 2026, to receive their direct deposit.

While the IRS doesn’t release a specific schedule for receiving tax refunds, once your return is accepted by the IRS, you can check the expected direct deposit date using the “Where’s My Refund?” tool. The date shown there is the day when your refund is most likely to be issued.

If you filed your return on paper, you will have to wait at least eight weeks. Assuming your paper return filing date is between January 09 and 15, 2026, you will have to wait until the second week of March 2026 to receive your refund.

And if you claimed a refundable tax credit, such as the EITC or ACTC, you may have to wait an additional two weeks.

What to do if you don’t receive your IRS tax refund by 2026 on time?

The IRS has clearly stated how long you should expect to wait to receive your refund, whether you filed electronically or on paper. If you still haven’t received your refund after waiting the appropriate amount of time, you should first check the status of your refund and find out if your refund has been accepted by the IRS.

If, after checking your refund status, you find that your refund has not yet been accepted, you should first contact the IRS to inquire about the matter.

If there are any missing documents, they may request them from you, and then your refund will be processed. If your return contains many errors, you may need to file an amended return.
